Network Organization and Synchronization for Time of Arrival Based Localization Algorithms

Abstract

This thesis deals with network organization and clock synchronization for wireless sensor networks. Particularly the goal is the enhancement and extension of the iPhoneLocalization application, a software suite for the development of localization algorithms based on ambient sounds. The requirements regarding network organization, communication and time synchronization are derived from the feature set of the application and the general characteristics of time of arrival (TOA) based localization. Suitable protocols and techniques are evaluated in a general technology scouting. A solution for the networking and communication requirements based on Apples Bonjour protocol is proposed and implemented. Furthermore the synchronization protocol used for local networks in the iPhoneLocalization is analysed and the network properties that affect its precision are identified. Then a suitable test setting to measure these properties in UMTS connections is devised and implemented, in order to estimate the performance and precision of the wide area synchronization.
